Abstract

1- READING AND UNDERSTANDING TIPS 1.1- Read all the text and try to understand the general context without using the dictionary. Avoid using dictionaries as much as possible. Reading becomes impractical if we consult the dictionary every time we find a word whose meaning is not clear. 1.2- Trust your intuition. There are many similar words between Portuguese and English. Make this resemblance work in your favor. Words like important, excelent, normal, manual, exam, doctor are words that we can deduce the meaning due to similarity. These words are called cognates. But we have to be careful with false cognates because they are false friends. Examples: intend (pretend), push (push), and current (actual).
