Abstract

This article analyzes the trajectory of the nation-state throughout the twentieth century, emphasizing the relationship between the consolidation of nationalism, the emergence of totalitarian regimes, and the transformations of the international order resulting from the World Wars and the Cold War. Initially, the study discusses the process of strengthening the nation-state in Europe, highlighting the centrality of sovereignty, national identity, and political centralization in the construction of modern institutions. It then examines totalitarianism as a specific form of political organization characterized by the concentration of state power, the ideological mobilization of the masses, and the suppression of political and individual freedoms. The experiences of Italian Fascism, German National Socialism, Soviet Stalinism, and Chinese Maoism are analyzed, emphasizing both their structural similarities and ideological differences. Subsequently, the article addresses the impacts of the First and Second World Wars on the reorganization of international relations, as well as the emergence of a bipolar order led by the United States and the Soviet Union. Finally, it examines the Cold War as the main organizing element of the international system during the second half of the twentieth century, highlighting ideological rivalry, the arms race, proxy conflicts, and the challenges posed to state sovereignty by the growing role of international organizations. The article concludes that the twentieth century was a period of profound political transformation whose effects continue to shape power structures and international relations in the contemporary world.
