Abstract

Giambattista Vico (1668–1744) occupies a unique position in the history of modern political and social thought. In a context marked by the impact of the Scientific Revolution and the rise of Enlightenment rationalism, the Neapolitan philosopher developed an innovative interpretation of the origins of society, the formation of the State, and the historical development of humankind. His major work, The New Science, sought to identify the regularities underlying historical processes, laying the foundations for a philosophy of history grounded in the analysis of human institutions. This article examines the main aspects of Vico's thought, emphasizing his conception of the bestial state, the stage of families, the formation of the first political organizations, the succession of forms of government, and the role of conflict as a driving force of historical transformation. It also analyzes his theory of corsi e ricorsi, through which Vico partially overcomes the cyclical conception of history characteristic of classical antiquity and anticipates central elements of the future social sciences. The study concludes that his work constitutes a decisive contribution to the historical understanding of political institutions and to the development of modern philosophy of history.
