The growing dependence of higher education institutions on Information Technology services makes it essential to adopt mechanisms that ensure the availability and operational continuity of academic systems. This article reports the practical experience of implementing the Zabbix platform for proactive monitoring of IT infrastructure in a private higher education institution in the Federal District of Brazil. The research is characterized as applied, with a case study design and qualitative approach, covering 11 critical technological assets – seven servers and four internet links. Based on the experience of the IT manager responsible for the implementation, results indicate a significant reduction in fault detection and response times, elimination of outages that previously went unnoticed until reported by users, and a qualitative change in the IT team’s operational approach. It is concluded that continuous monitoring, even in small-scale environments, represents a high-return investment for IT governance in higher education institutions.
