Abstract

Rio de Janeiro, June 12, 2000. Rio (and Brazil) may not have seen such dramatic scenes of violence and psychological torture in its streets as it did on that Monday afternoon in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, Southern Zone of the City. It was more than four hours of terror, with direct broadcast on TV. A bus from line 174, Gávea / Central, was kidnapped by a tall, black man, apparently drugged, who identified himself as Sergio and said he was possessed by the devil. He embarked armed, at Rua Jardim Botânico, in front of Lagoa Hospital, at 2:25 pm. Reported by a pedestrian, the police reached and stopped the bus in front of Parque Lage. The exchanger, the driver and some passengers managed to escape, but eleven hostages remained on the bus.
