The article aims to analyze the various arguments about the best form of government developed by Herodotus in his book History. The Greek historian recreates a "celebrated discussion" that is said to have taken place in Persia between three participants: Othanes, Megavises and Darius, each of whom defends a certain form of government as the best while making a critique of the forms of government defended by the other participants in the debate. Finally, the classification of the forms of government in classical political philosophy is presented.
