Discovering what justice is is the great challenge imposed on law scholars. Does a just society seek to promote the virtue of its citizens? Or should the law be neutral as to the conceptions concerning virtue, leaving citizens free to choose on their own the best way to live? This question addressed by Michael J. Sandel in his book Justice is of great importance, because it rekindles a classic debate in the philosophy of law, in political philosophy and in the history of these two disciplines, because it concerns three major currents of philosophical thought regarding justice: utilitarian theories, theories on the defense of individual freedom and theories about virtue. The work Justice, by Michael J. Sandel is analyzed in this article, from the philosophical, legal and sociological perspectives.
