The article aims to analyze some of the most important demonstrations and popular street protests that have taken place today. The demonstrations that took place in Brazil (2013), the United States of America (2020) and Chile (2019-2020) are examined, just as some representative examples. In order to better understand these new collective actions, both Rousseau's classic interpretation of representative democracy and direct democracy are presented in a critical way, as well as the contemporary theoretical conceptions of sociologists Zigmunt Bauman and Manuel Castells about the emergence of new actors current protests. Finally, it is proposed as a guiding hypothesis, both for new theoretical developments and for future empirical research, to analyze the relevant role of a new social actor that we call "individual".
