The theme of this article is "Metabolic surgery for individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus: public policies and rights of users of the Unified Health System Brazil (SUS) in the Federal District". The following problem was investigated: "how to increase the expectation and quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) users of SUS in the Federal District?" The following hypothesis was considered: "metabolic surgery for DM2 is a new technique and was performed for the first time in the Federal District for SUS users about 1 (one) year ago, making nutritional monitoring of diabetic patients essential in the pre and post-surgery ". The general objective is "to investigate the effects of metabolic surgery for individuals with DM2 and the importance of nutritional monitoring in the pre and post-surgery period in order to increase survival with better quality of life and, consequently, reduce health costs". The specific objectives are: "to describe the impact of DM2 as a serious public health problem"; "Evaluate the effects of metabolic surgery for DM2 as a right of the SUS user"; "To ascertain the importance of nutritional monitoring in the pre and post-surgery phases of this therapeutic modality" and "to emphasize the need for public policies capable of meeting the demands on DM2, without increasing health costs and, simultaneously, providing integral health care diabetics, within the scope of SUS ". This study is important from an individual perspective due to the high occurrence of DM2 cases in Brazil, particularly in the DF and in our families, as well as the high incidence of patients who do not respond to conventional treatment even through the policy of free medication distribution , materials for insulin application and capillary blood glucose monitoring. For science, it is relevant because it can establish a system (surgical intervention and specific nutritional monitoring), whose success increases the quality of life of these patients who do not respond to usual treatment and decreases the mortality rates due to this disease; it adds to society due to the fact that it reduces public spending on treatment and hospitalizations for this disease, whose saved resource can contribute to the improvement of the nutritional monitoring of this disease, in addition to serving as a possible model for the treatment of other diseases. It is an exploratory research on the theme through scientific articles published in the last five years.
